The Late John Wilkinson Lovell

It was with profound sadness that the Board of Directors received the news of the passing of Mr. John W. Lovell, past President of the Barbados Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited.

Mr. Lovell was an indefatigable contributor to the birth, development and maturation of the Credit Union. Renowned for his efforts to spread the message of thrift across the public school system, Mr. Lovell and the other founders of the Barbados Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited provided visionary leadership to an institution that has become one of the strongest and most respected credit unions in Barbados.

John taught the principles of credit unionism with near religious fervour, toiling relentlessly to strengthen the organization which he served for decades.

Indeed, it was in recognition of his sterling contribution to the Barbados Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited that its headquarters in Lower Collymore Rock, St. Michael was named the “John W. Lovell Building”.  When the Credit Union was registered in 1967 as Credit Union number 112, Mr. Lovell was its first President.

Mr. Lovell’s work, witness and example should serve as an inspiration to teachers and credit unionists for generations to come. His invaluable contribution to the movement will be imprinted indelibly in the minds of the credit union members.

The Directors, on behalf of all Committees, Staff and general members of the Barbados Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited, extend sincere condolences to his widow Mrs. Dorothy Lovell, his children, grandchildren and his extended family.
